Colour My World Visual Arts E-Bulletin Mar-Apr 2026
WHAT’S THEIR STORY?
What makes up a story? Setting, characters, and narrative! This Mar-Apr term, we’re diving into storytelling through Visual Arts, including painting, sculpture, textiles, and more. Set the scene with a papercrafted world, construct a mixed-media textile structure, or think about the rooms in your home with your own range of bathroom accessories or wallpaper design. Create a colourful cast of characters on your iPad or get hands-on with claymation. Weave it all together with a narrative thread, plotting and planning a comic or bring the written word to visual life with a painting of a well-known phrase. Prepare for a vibrant exploration of imagination and expression this Spring!

Explorer’s Art (3 – 5 yrs)
What’s Their Story?
When you think of an awesome story, it’s not just the characters that come to mind, the setting is just as crucial! Create your very own storybook world, with a quirky cast of characters and a whimsical scene to place them in. Our little Explorers will learn basic human anatomy and refine their developing illustrative skills with a selection of 2D character drawings. They’ll then take it to the next dimension with a 3D papercrafted scene to host their characters, complete with a selection of props. So what’s your story?
Core Art (5 – 10 yrs)
Artoptic
Our Core Artists are set to embark on an exciting creative journey by drawing inspiration from two iconic artists: Edna Andrade and Do Ho Suh. First, they’ll embrace the geometric abstraction and compositions by American Op Artist Andrade to create their own vibrant 2D optical illusion paintings inspired by the circle, the triangle, the square, the pentagon abundant in nature. Then, they’ll delve into the translucent 3D re-created life-size architectural structures of South Korean artist Suh, which explore themes of memory, identity, and personal space, crafting their own unique responses to his thought-provoking works. Get ready for a blend of colour, dimension, and personal expression!
Drawing Fundamentals (6 – 8 yrs)
A Balanced Diet
This term, we’re taking Drawing Fundamentals to the kitchen! However, instead of utensils and a kitchen sink we’ll be using watercolour pencils and lots of ink! With a variety of fine-liner ink pens, watercolours and intricate shading techniques, we will learn how to artistically construct a detailed and colourful plate of our most precious food ingredients. Drawing food items is a versatile way to teach the core elements of art as food provides diverse textures, vibrant colours and complex, organic/geometric forms. We’ll also touch upon value (shading), line, space and composition as we create a dish that’s sure to inspire hunger in any viewer!
Ready-Set-Draw (8 yrs+)
Repetitive Rhythm In A Room
This term, we will be focusing on Pattern & Rhythm! Learn to organise uniform, consistent repetition of shapes, lines and colours to create a sense of movement and tempo in your artwork. Draw varied Zentangle patterns with interesting variations of shapes, then explore ways to digitally reproduce your favourite subjects and motifs in a visually appealing composition. Finally, using your unique design, render a wallpaper for a miniature interior as you hone your visual spatial awareness and learn how to balance aesthetics with functional needs!
Comics (8 yrs+)
From Script to Page
Appreciate the collaborative nature of the comic industry, highlighting the essential roles of writers, pencilers, inkers, colourists, and letterers. Each job is vital in bringing a comic to life. Learn to read industry-standard comic scripts and illustrate your own unique interpretation. You will hone your skills in storytelling and visual composition, gaining a deeper understanding of story flow as you learn to interpret written content into visual imagery.
Pixelated
(Digital Arts 10 yrs+)
Gotta Design ‘Em All!
With an irresistible combination of graphic design, illustration, and game design, trading cards remain as popular as ever! Create your own custom cards, designing the template and logos from scratch. Then illustrate one of your original characters using digital painting techniques. Gain valuable experience working for a physical outcome, using the correct size, colour, and layout settings for professionally printed cards. The result: miniature artworks you can trade with your friends!
Ceramic Fanatics
(Pottery-Ceramics 10 yrs+)
Ikea Who?
Who needs Ikea when you can make your personalised set of soap-holding interior goodies by hand? Learn all about clay shrinkage to accurately estimate the final size of your vessel, and ensure a snug fit for your handmade soap bottle pump. Using slab and coil building, customise both your soap dispenser and a matching soap dish to complement the interior of a bathroom. Then apply underglaze to create your unique functional and decorative items to accessorize your bathroom spaces.
Sculpture Culture
(Mixed-media 3D Design 10 yrs+)
3D Design Meets Animation
Delve into the wonderful world of stop-motion animation, where sculptural art meets storytelling and movement! Begin by exploring the fundamentals of anatomy and character design as you craft and sculpt your own figurine using plasticine clay. Next, learn the foundational principles of animation and create a simplistic storyboard to bring your creation to life in a dynamic short animated sequence. Discover and enjoy the creative process of merging sculpture with narrative!
Sketchbook Studies & Painting (10 yrs+)
Visual Idiom
Combine wordplay and painting to create your own aesthetically-pleasing ‘Visual Idiom’ using an idiom or a proverb from English, your mother tongue, or a third language, literally. The final artwork will be a mixed-media piece rendered primarily in acrylics supplemented with a choice of materials such as collage, oil pastel, marker, and more. Build on your heavily-rendered preparatory drawing skills, and transfer your draft on to the surface using a projector. Take inspiration from the saturated, contemporary colour palette of artist Nikki Maloof (Perrotin Gallery) and rely primarily on imagination and visual arts knowledge rather than visual references.
Mentor Studio (13 yrs+)
For art enthusiasts who are considering Art for GCSE, A-Levels, IGCSE or IB; or who simply enjoy being stretched artistically. Mentor Studio is open to any participants who want to strengthen their skill repertoire, build on their collection of portfolio-worthy artworks, or explore challenging themes through open-ended self-enquiry guided closely by a mentor.
