Explorer’s Art   (3 – 5 yrs)

Bold Dreams

Come create endearing art that captures the whimsical, inspired by Joan Miro’s The Garden (1925) and Paul Klee’s collotype print The Bridegroom’s Arrival (1933). Using Miro’s iconic biomorphic forms, enigmatic symbols and great labyrinths of colour that reflect his interest in dreams, we will create bold expressive characters and interesting shapes to decorate a one-of-a-kind mobile. We shall then paint and collage a Kleesque relief art of our own fantastical portraiture with kaleidoscopic hues contrasted against black lines and mixed media elements.

Core Art   (5 – 10 yrs)

Green Daze

Two American artists’ works will be the springboard for the duet outcomes of Green Daze. With spring awakening all living things, we shall delve deep into the fantastical world of nature and botany. Study the very distinctive and divergent visual languages in Jonas Wood’s series of tropical foliage and Mark Bradford’s Wild Wild West. We shall explore practical renderings of flowers and plants, emphasizing the use of found materials and texture in the first tactile project, transfiguring everyday materials into a hands-on layered assemblage. Then in the second project, utilise blocking and stylisation for a graphical gouache illustration.

Drawing Fundamentals   (6 – 8 yrs)

Canned Toons

We will learn about the essential principles to creating a fun and captivating product design! By studying the works of legendary cartoonists such as Aaron Blaise, Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, participants will learn the ins-and-outs to creating an emotive animal mascot for their fictional brand. Using core typography principles, acrylic paint and markers, they will then fashion a brand-name logo to be applied, along with their mascot, onto a physical object: a soda can!

Ready-Set-Draw   (8 yrs+)

Dynamic Composition

Discover the art of drawing objects by applying geometry and careful observation. Compile your best works into a dynamic, digitally-coloured composition inspired by the vivid and engaging pieces of contemporary artist Michael Craig-Martin.

Note: Students may be given an iPad with Procreate or a laptop with Photoshop to complete the digital colouring. Those with their own devices are encouraged to bring them in for the April month of classes.

Comics   (8 yrs+)

Mini Zines

Don’t wait to be a published author to start sharing your art and stories with the world. Instead jump into the art of creating your own mini zines! This term, learn about the history of zines and their purpose as a form of self-publishing. Come up with a theme you enjoy such as a zine all about personal experiences, music, the adventures of your own original character, or even foods and recipes! Fill your zine with a collage of comic strips, illustrations, and playful typography about your chosen theme. With the contents and layout complete, photocopy and assemble your zine for easy sharing with friends and family.

Explorer’s Art   (3 – 5 yrs)

A Picturesque Town

For the start of the new year, our little Explorers will dream up their own idyllic neighbourhoods with two wonderful town-themed projects. First, they will be introduced to basic resist art techniques with a ‘Faux Batik’ art piece. Plan the composition of a new town, apply a resist agent to watercolour paper, then watch as your town planning design magically appears right before your eyes! Then they’ll get to grips with simplistic 3D modelling through the creation of a town skyline, displayed in a unique paper-crafted frame!

Core Art   (5 – 10 yrs)

Lines Encounter

Informed by two contemporary conceptual painters, Holly Coulis and Michael Craig-Martin,  this term’s exploration focuses on the way we see mundane objects and how we transform the familiar into a magnified painterly field; from still life to animated abstraction. Colour as paramount will be enhanced with the rich quality of the lines; lines that reinforce and lines that intersect and weave, creating a vibrant and energetic geometric tableau through a two-dimensional rendering and a transparent 3D puzzle piece that delights all.

Drawing Fundamentals   (6 – 8 yrs)

A New Perspective

This new year, we shall delve into the most fun-damental skills to create realistic perspective art, covering one-and-two-point-perspectives. Study the masters of the past from Pietro Perugino to Gustave Caillebotte and learn how to create convincing 3D spaces in a 2D medium. Then based on these essential drawing principles, our participants will take what they have learned and add a splash of imagination, to turn the classical into the fantastical with a fictional city from their own imagination — one that might even rival the Emerald City of Oz!

Ready-Set-Draw   (8 yrs+)

Conceptual Creature Illustration

In this design-oriented Ready-Set-Draw term, participants will learn about conceptual illustration – a way of visually communicating an idea in a concise but thought-provoking manner, often clever and delightful! By taking what they learned previously about the technical elements of realistic animal and landscape drawings, our participants will create something truly epic! Using important principles of graphic design, they will style and paint with a controlled colour palette, a conceptual illustration that features the shape and textures of a wild animal to outline a beautiful vista of its natural habitat.

Comics   (8 yrs+)

Cover It All

Look back and take inspiration from the Golden and Silver Age of American Comics with titles like Action Comics, Detective Comics, The Vault of Horror, and Tales from the Crypt. This era also introduced us to wildly popular superhero characters like Superman and Spiderman. This term, you will study core principles of character design and figure anatomy as you map out your very own illustrative comic cover, honing your newly acquired knowhow of layout design, composition, fonts and colour. Draw from the hallmarks from old comic covers to fashion your own design that really pops!

Ready-Set-Draw   (8 yrs+)

Where Would You Go?

If your imagination could take you anywhere, where would you go? We’ll be taking our newly-created characters (from Sep-Oct) outside for a stroll! By looking at influential landscape masters such as Caspar David Friedrich (romantic landscapes), Albert Bierstadt (lavish American West landscapes) and Moebius (surreal fantasy landscapes), we’ll be learning about crucial drawing principles such as how to apply a one-point-perspective and create the illusion of depth in our artworks. We’ll pen captivating scenery (natural, urban or fantastical) for our characters to inhabit; and a stunning 3-dimensional “pop-up rendition” enhanced with watercolour pencils and ink.

Comics   (8 yrs+)

Silent Comics

There are times when our words fail us and we can only express our stories through images alone. Silent comics have the advantage of being accessible to a wider range of readers as images can offer us visual clues to help decode stories. Look at a broad spectrum of silent comics from superhero comics, gag comics and mangas to learn what makes them effective in their storytelling. Create your own silent comic – when words, narration and dialogue go away, tell your story purely through visuals!
