Explorer’s Art   (3 – 5 yrs)

That’s Surreal!

Have you ever had very weird dreams? If so, then let’s make some art out of it! Our Explorers will find out what Surrealism is all about, starting with an experimental kinetic art sculpture (decorative hanging mobile) featuring suspended and balanced shapes and textures. Then you will fashion an original photomontage using a photo portrait of yourself, complemented by a blend of dream imagery and bizarre elements in Australian artist Loui Jover’s distinct ink-wash style.

Core Art   (5 – 10 yrs)

I Had A Dream

Our Core Artists will be taking inspiration from Rene Magritte and other surrealist artists famous for challenging perceptions of reality by placing ordinary mundane objects in unfamiliar and witty contexts. Start off with a Surrealist game, once popularized by artists in the 1920s, a chance-based activity designed to bypass conscious logic and unlock the unconscious mind, creating unexpected results. You will choose objects at random and combine them into a painting of a humanoid in an alien setting. Then you will learn about the importance of structure and balance in three-dimensional form and build together facial features with clay a la Magritte.

Drawing Fundamentals   (6 – 8 yrs)

Zootopia!

In an ever-evolving world that is now filled with artificially made art, it’s important to remember that all art once came solely from the hands and minds of humans. Our participants will prompt themselves by asking the question: “What would my favourite animal look like in human attire?” If it’s a rabbit, how do we visually communicate its personal identity, cultural affiliation and status? The result, a physical artwork made conventionally from start to finish, will be a humorous animal portrait drawn with pencil and enhanced with gouache on paper. If you can imagine it, you can create it!

Ready-Set-Draw   (8 yrs+)

The Magic Number

This upcoming term, we shall practice the final Principle of Art: Unity. By applying all of the 7 Principles of Art, our participants will use pen work and watercolour to create a fantasy-inspired triptych illustration worthy of the art history books! We’ll be adding focal points to our artwork using Contrast and Emphasis, apply symmetry and asymmetry to achieve a sense of Balance and incorporate Rhythm and Repetition to evoke a sense of stillness in our environments — all while assigning Movement to our unique characters and creatures. Unity is the principle of design that teaches us how to organize all of our varied elements and cohesively tie them into one composition in order to create a sense of harmony and completeness!

Comics   (8 yrs+)

Anatomy of a Cover

Fashion compelling comic book covers with a strong focus on graphic design elements strategic in cover design. Study real comic and manga covers, as well as contemporary samples to understand how visual hierarchy, layout, colour, and stylistic choices blend together. Use watercolour, ink pens, and acrylic markers to create your own cover that conveys the theme and tone of your narrative. Further hone key skills in illustration, composition, colour theory, and typography to create an eye-catching cover!

Pixelated

(Digital Arts 10 yrs+)

Digital Nouveau

Have you ever seen an advert so beautiful you wanted to hang it on your wall or make it your phone wallpaper? This term we’re taking inspiration from Alphonse Mucha, best known for his intricate Art Nouveau promotional posters, admired as pieces of art in their own right. Now in the 21st century the tall, thin format of his posters finds a new purpose, filling the display on a smart phone. Promote your favourite book, movie, or game with a full-screen poster, bringing together a range of digital art skills including illustration, typography, and graphic design, while learning how to balance a composition, contrasting areas of flat colour with dense patterns and details.

Ceramic Fanatics

(Pottery-Ceramics 10 yrs+)

Berries & Toast

Bring home a little piece of summer with our Berry Bowl module. Learn core hand-building skills to mould our very own berry bowl true to real fruit proportion while exploring size, pattern and perforations. Practice slab-moulding with plaster forms, cut and shape templates, add structural and decorative details before experimenting with underglaze finishes. Then, turn snack time into craft time with our Toast Clock module – a playful, practical project as we design and build a toast-shaped table clock that encapsulates all essential knowhow such as shrinkage calculation to fit a clock mechanism following two times firing. From sketching and measuring to carefully joining decorations, each step develops creative thinking, fine motor control and basic structural engineering in clay.

Sculpture Culture

(Mixed-media 3D Design 10 yrs+)

Casting Me

Inspired by artist Rachel Dein’s botanical sculptures from concrete and plaster, this term will introduce you to the exciting medium of mod roc and the knowhow of sculptural casting. You’ll bring in objects that represent and reflect you, learn how to turn them into cast forms while developing a balance of composition to optimize visual impact. You’ll then plan and arrange your cast pieces onto a canvas to create a textured sculptural relief that uniquely reflects you.

Sketchbook Studies & Painting   (10 yrs+)

Painter’s Tape

Explore a range of traditional and contemporary techniques to create a layered portrait in oil. Learn the basics of mixing skin tones and painting facial features. Portray yourself dressed as a character (original or other) and posed for a dramatic portrait. Add an extra ‘layer’ to your oil painting through scalpel and masking techniques often used in contemporary art. Peel for the big reveal!

Mentor Studio   (13 yrs+)

For art enthusiasts who are considering Art for GCSE, A-Levels, IGCSE or IB; or who simply enjoy being stretched artistically. Mentor Studio is open to any participants who want to strengthen their skill repertoire, build on their collection of portfolio-worthy artworks, or explore challenging themes through open-ended self-enquiry guided closely by a mentor. Acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding of art-form, techniques and styles used as we guide you through various artistic decision and pathways to artistic achievement.

Our Core Artists are set to embark on an exciting creative journey by drawing inspiration from two iconic artists: Edna Andrade and Do Ho Suh. First, they’ll embrace the geometric abstraction and compositions by American Op Artist Andrade to create their own vibrant 2D optical illusion paintings inspired by the circle, the triangle, the square, the pentagon abundant in nature. Then, they’ll delve into the translucent 3D re-created life-size architectural structures of South Korean artist Suh, which explore themes of memory, identity, and personal space, crafting their own unique responses to his thought-provoking works. Get ready for a blend of colour, dimension, and personal expression!

Drawing Fundamentals   (6 – 8 yrs)

A Balanced Diet

This term, we’re taking Drawing Fundamentals to the kitchen! However, instead of utensils and a kitchen sink we’ll be using watercolour pencils and lots of ink! With a variety of fine-liner ink pens, watercolours and intricate shading techniques, we will learn how to artistically construct a detailed and colourful plate of our most precious food ingredients. Drawing food items is a versatile way to teach the core elements of art as food provides diverse textures, vibrant colours and complex, organic/geometric forms. We’ll also touch upon value (shading), line, space and composition as we create a dish that’s sure to inspire hunger in any viewer!

Explorer’s Art   (3 – 5 yrs)

The Weird And Wonderful

With biomorphic art, the result can be both familiar and strange, as we combine organic shapes and patterns found in nature in weird and wonderful ways. We will begin with a Yayoi Kusama-inspired painting of bizarre mushrooms. Our little Explorers will capture the wild colours and varied forms and shapes in fungi, while appreciating Kusama’s signature dot motif and learning the basics of repetitive pattern-making. Next we’ll experiment with a variety of materials in a mixed-media homage to Canadian fibre artist Andrea Graham’s innovative biological 3D artwork and felting installation. Is it a plant, animal, or fungus? A biomorphic sculpture can take inspiration from all three!

Core Art   (5 – 10 yrs)

Lost To Time

We’ll be looking at the traditional crafts of Hong Kong and thinking about why it’s important to preserve intangible heritage and celebrate local culture in our modern day societies. First, take inspiration from British artist Lubaina Himid, whose art aims to preserve moments from history that risk being lost to time. Using vivid colours and stylised character design, you will paint a local workshop scene of artisanal work and craftsmanship, such as lantern making, dimsum basket weaving or ceramics glazing. Next, you will try for yourself, the craft of stamp seal carving! Sculpt air dry clay for the topper, then focussing on the graphic design and lettering, carve foam for the stamp to create a custom seal that’s unique to you.

Drawing Fundamentals   (6 – 8 yrs)

My Treasured Still Life

In this term of Drawing Fundamentals, we will delve into the relationship between light and shadow and the importance of contrast, all crucial for creating depth, form and mood by using a range of tonal values to define a three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface. Drawing objects from real life is one of the most effective ways to hone your hand-eye coordination and observational skills. By creating a variety of still life drawings using different media, we will gain the tools required to make two separate oil and dry pastel paintings portraying our favourite possessions!

Ready-Set-Draw   (8 yrs+)

I Like To Move It!

Starting off 2026, Ready-Set-Draw is hitting the ground running! In this new year term, we shall continue our journey through the Seven Principles of Art by focusing on movement. By using elements like line, colour, and rhythm and with the help of pencil, ink and digital tools, participants will learn how to suggest physical action in a still image by creating a scene of their own and poses for their character of choice. Their artwork will then be brought to life through the making of an animated GIF (with Adobe Photoshop) by looping a series of images in rapid succession to convey motion and sense of humour!

Comics   (8 yrs+)

Storyscape

The environment in comics is not just a backdrop but a crucial element that drives narrative and provides context for readers. This term, further develop your sequential art skills as we dive into environmental storytelling, learning to use environment design to enhance your story and world-building. Taking inspiration from artist Moebius, who was a master in visual storytelling, we will examine how he used detailed landscapes, intricate character designs, and bold use of colours to craft immersive dreamlike worlds as the backdrop to his narratives. You’ll explore techniques for crafting immersive settings that support your narrative, develop characters, and convey mood. The culmination of this term will be a double-page spread, or splash page, where you’ll showcase your ability to hone narrative with environment design, creating a rich, accessible and engaging narration.

Pixelated

(Digital Arts 10 yrs+)

Run, Jump, Sprites!

Sprites are the basic building blocks of 2D videogames, like a frame of animation for every movement a character can perform! First we’ll design original characters, then bring them to life with sprites for everything from a simple walk cycle to complex actions. Newcomers will investigate the history of videogames, using a simple but bold 8-bit pixel art style, whereas our digital art veterans can try their hand at the fluid, hand-drawn visuals found in modern 2D games. The finished result will be a complete sprite sheet that shows the full range of motion for your game character!

Ceramic Fanatics

(Pottery-Ceramics 10 yrs+)

Transformed Elements

Build upon your foundational skills to transform basic ceramic vessels into more complex forms. Starting with the process to mould a cup, we’ll then change it into a sculpture of a plastic bag. Then use transferring techniques to add custom miniature logos. Then it’s onto another staple form of ceramics; the bowl. Mixing coloured and white clay, you will create two basic bowl forms, then join them together! This yields a hollow form which can be carved into or built upon to create a vase with a beautiful marbled effect.

Sketchbook Studies & Painting   (10 yrs+)

Contemporary Mythology

Mythologise your life. Create a mysterious, magical and surreal contemporary myth based on the aesthetics of objects that surround you today. Take inspiration from folk mythologies and urban legends, and craft something unique to your individual experience of the world around you. Be informed by renowned multi-award-winning Taiwanese-American artist James Jean who blends traditional East-Asian art with contemporary imagery in his complex compositions. Take your illustration from concept to sketch to lineart and full-colour form in your choice of a combination of gouache, watercolour ink and liner.

Ready-Set-Draw   (8 yrs+)

Balancing Act

We shall continue our travels through the 7 Principles of Art by learning about Balance where art elements are arranged to create a sense of visual stability and harmony in the artwork. From bilateral to horizontal symmetry, and radial symmetry to asymmetry, we’ll learn how placement, detail and colour can bring balance to an image through hands-on drawing exercises. For our final project we’ll be looking at human faces which are often perceived as beautiful and perfect, a symmetry concept readily explored in portraiture. We shall illustrate masks with ink and colour from cultures around the world and create a detailed, symmetrical masterpiece on card!

Comics   (8 yrs+)

Mangaka!

Japanese comic characters are everywhere, but where did this style come from and how does it differ from Western comics? Learn a brief history of Japanese manga, its impact on comics today, and gain insight into the techniques and processes that go into making them. Using traditional mediums such as ink dip pens for that classic manga style, take inspiration from artists who defined the artform: Osamu Tezuka, Takashi Nagasaki, Rumiko Takahashi, Katsuhiro Otomo, and more. Bring to life your own little companion full of personality!

Sketchbook Studies & Painting   (10 yrs+)

Portrait in Abstraction

Influential Russian sculptor Naum Gabo said that when an artist creates an artwork from life, they are creating a new reality. Every succeeding transformation of the image in the creative process creates another new reality. Take inspiration from his innovative artistic perspective and transform an image of yourself in a variety of artistic ways. Create a card model of yourself, abstracted, and transpose it into an acrylic painting. Use wonky gridding for a distorted ‘funhouse mirror’ portrait. Experiment with ways of seeing the image of yourself and create new realities.

Core Art   (5 – 10 yrs)

Hockney’s Landscapes

This upcoming year in Core Art we shall embark on a new outlook, where active engagement with a singular artist and their body of work kick-starts a conversation with our budding artists every term.

This Autumn term, we’ll be looking at David Hockney’s vivid natural landscapes, particularly Winter Timber (2009) and A Bigger Picture (2012). Inspired by his multiple screens approach, the first project puts a collaborative spin on depicting landscapes with miniature tin dioramas fashioned from paint, to stones, to dried lichen to build layers of 3D texture. We shall then record our peers’ works to render one large gridded landscape. Then, we’ll reconnect with the local landscape with acrylic paintings of the Wong Chuk Hang area, using a mixture of observational drawing and expressive colour to create a piece that feels larger than life!

Drawing Fundamentals   (6 – 8 yrs)

Birds of Colour

Nearly any piece of art begins with a drawing, whether it’s while coming up with ideas or making the base layer to a masterful painting! To start out this year of learning drawing as a crucial base-skill, we’ll be creating a watercolour pencil artwork inspired by 18th century artist, John James Audubon. Like Audubon, we’ll use a large variety of colours to make detailed depictions of birds in their natural (or un-natural) habitats!

Ready-Set-Draw   (8 yrs+)

Emphasis and Contrast

In this first term of Ready-Set-Draw, we’re starting out our journey through the 7 Principles of Art by learning about Emphasis and Contrast. We’ll look at how masters of both old and new have used these principles to their advantage, including master painter, Caravaggio, expert engraver, Gustave Dore, and comic book legend, Frank Miller. With one accent colour and the darkest ink available, participants will use pens and brushes to play with negative space in order to create a Miller-esque artwork that would grab the attention of just about anyone!

Comics   (8 yrs+)

The Art of Pacing

Unlock the art of comic storytelling as we hone our skills in paneling and dynamic narrative techniques. Begin your journey by crafting a simple four-panel story, then refine and expand it into six-panels. Through these iterative revisions, you’ll learn to control the rhythm of your narrative, experimenting with how each panel contributes to the pacing, timing, and overall flow of your story. In the final phase, transform your work into a compelling one-page comic with nine panels, showcasing your newfound skills.

Pixelated

(Digital Arts 10 yrs+)

Digital Toy Shop

The toys and collectables market is booming and it seems like there’s a new craze every month, but what will the next craze be? Take cues from a range of retro and modern sources to come up with your own immersive miniature playset designed in your choice of Photoshop or Procreate. Get to grips with spatial thinking to solve problems in the set’s construction and use your software’s technical drawing tools to illustrate diagrams that show its functions. Clever use of layers and duplicates will allow you to depict moving parts and removable pieces. Once you’re confident it’s a working design, pitch your idea with two convincing pieces of concept art, showing the interior and exterior of your set.

Ceramic Fanatics

Sculpture Culture

(Mixed-media 3D Design 10 yrs+)

Dynamic Wire

Join us this term to explore gesture and movement with wire! Taking inspiration from Celia Smith, an artist renowned for her wire sculptures of birds in flight, you’ll shape dynamic poses in your own 3D sculpture that almost looks like a 2D sketch. By bending and manipulating wire, we’ll learn to capture poses to create a sculpture that brings a sequence of movements to life. Then, explore the contours of faces to create a sculptural self-portrait to convey personality and expression with wire. Discover that sculpture can be more than just static forms and give your pieces a sense of energy and movement.

Sketchbook Studies & Painting   (10 yrs+)

Cinematic Feelings

Taking inspiration from renowned Beijing-based artist Li Songsong’s techniques and subjects, we shall capture the feelings of two characters in a cinematic setting. Learn to paint with a palette knife while studying anatomy and figure drawing from photographic references reminiscent of a movie. Create an abstracted background, and paint figures over it. Portray the relationship of two vivid characters, taking reference from film stills.
