Art, Design And Everything In Between

“Art and Design” is a phrase we use often, but are they two different things or are they intertwined? Approach Art in its pure forms of expression with genres like Action Painting or Abstracted Portraiture. On the other end of the scale, work with Design, using creative thinking to solve problems such as a Graphic Design project brief or aim for a practical outcome with dining room Ceramics. Join us this Nov-Dec term as we investigate innovation through these lenses.

Explorer’s Art   (3 – 5 yrs)

Spontaneous!

What better fun than art experiments! Our little Explorers will get to experience Process Art, where we delve deep into the creative journey, fun exploration of material & technique, with abundant self-expression. With Action Painting, Free Flow Collage and Bloom Art, all turning out a whole series of highly unpredictable art outcomes which will then be put together into a unique calendar, ready for 2026! Continuing on with our second project, we will experiment with depth and dimension with our very own Layered Art inspired by Alexandra Mathias & Wyatt Graff.

Core Art   (5 – 10 yrs)

Artist Pot

Art history is an ongoing chain, each generation inspiring the next. This term, our Core Artists will be introduced to a range of famous artworks from western art history. Taking inspiration from Los Angeles-based contemporary artist  Jonas Wood’s Matisse Pot series, they’ll create their own freestanding vase illustration inspired by famous masterpieces of all time. Then, they will take an element of their illustration and transpose it to a patterned table runner design using printmaking techniques of stamp and stencil, experiencing first-hand how art is reinterpreted over and over into new forms.

Drawing Fundamentals   (6 – 8 yrs)

Negative Space

Closing out this calendar year of Drawing Fundamentals, our participants will learn how to work with negative space in order to create convincing and beautiful snowy landscapes. Taking inspiration from Japanese woodblock experts such as Hokusai (Edo period) and Asano Takeji (20th Century), we will develop dynamic pencil compositions to be rendered into watercolour artworks that portray cold and beautiful wintry scenes in the northern hemisphere!

Ready-Set-Draw   (8 yrs+)

Balancing Act

We shall continue our travels through the 7 Principles of Art by learning about Balance where art elements are arranged to create a sense of visual stability and harmony in the artwork. From bilateral to horizontal symmetry, and radial symmetry to asymmetry, we’ll learn how placement, detail and colour can bring balance to an image through hands-on drawing exercises. For our final project we’ll be looking at human faces which are often perceived as beautiful and perfect, a symmetry concept readily explored in portraiture. We shall illustrate masks with ink and colour from cultures around the world and create a detailed, symmetrical masterpiece on card!

Comics   (8 yrs+)

Mangaka!

Japanese comic characters are everywhere, but where did this style come from and how does it differ from Western comics? Learn a brief history of Japanese manga, its impact on comics today, and gain insight into the techniques and processes that go into making them. Using traditional mediums such as ink dip pens for that classic manga style, take inspiration from artists who defined the artform: Osamu Tezuka, Takashi Nagasaki, Rumiko Takahashi, Katsuhiro Otomo, and more. Create a two-page mid-story sequence using your original characters, manga-style!

Start by designing your functional vessel, and then practice wheel-throwing until you achieve the desirable form. Use hand-building techniques to sculpt the details to perfect your ware. Create two highly-functional pieces to keep for life or create excellent personalised gifts.

Sculpture Culture

(Mixed-media 3D Design 10 yrs+)

Felted Figures

Create your own little world in the form of a tactile diorama box using merino wool. Design your needle-felted creature and its habitat, planning the composition and structure. Start by crafting a wire armature as the base for your creation, then you will explore a range of needle-felting know how such as dry and wet felting. Bring to life your own little companion full of personality!

Sketchbook Studies & Painting   (10 yrs+)

Portrait in Abstraction

Influential Russian sculptor Naum Gabo said that when an artist creates an artwork from life, they are creating a new reality. Every succeeding transformation of the image in the creative process creates another new reality. Take inspiration from his innovative artistic perspective and transform an image of yourself in a variety of artistic ways. Create a card model of yourself, abstracted, and transpose it into an acrylic painting. Use wonky gridding for a distorted ‘funhouse mirror’ portrait. Experiment with ways of seeing the image of yourself and create new realities.
