Chinese New Year celebratory Art and Drama Camp opens for those littlie artists / dramatists! Spanning three mornings of festive fun, we will craft, sculpt and dramatise an array of visual arts and storytelling bursting with originality, colour and creativity! Our more seasoned artists will be coached on both physical and digital art in the spirit of jovial familial fondness.

Unleash your inner fire and dance into the Year of the Dragon! Embark on a journey of artistic expression with choreography inspired by the majestic dragon. Dive into the depths of dynamic movements, perform for a recorded video, and share this experience with your loved ones this holiday!

The Dragon is on the loose this Chinese New Year!  Young artists will create their own dancing puppet dragon to celebrate the festivities. Painting their own golden and shiny papers for textured scales, learning folding techniques, cutting, gluing, and constructing this elaborate scaly creature to dance into the new year.

IN DRAMA…

The year of the dragon is upon us! Join us in performing the tale of The Great Race, a playful and poetic rendition of the Chinese zodiac myth. Hone your acting skills and explore diverse characters. Join in the world of narration, script reading, and devised performance this holiday!

Take inspiration from the Chinese folk art of old Nianhua (New-Year pictures) to create your own New Year scene. Bring a photo of your family’s festive celebrations and turn it into a contemporary watercolour and liner illustration. Use a lightbox to trace key details from your photograph, infuse the composition with auspicious symbols, and use a limited colour palette to complete your retro festive scene.

Experience art creation that draws upon digital technology this Chinese New Year. Create a groovy yet majestic-looking dragon using digital illustration and symmetry tools on an iPad or laptop! Investigate the history of the Zodiac and its five elements in Chinese mythology to generate a strong design concept, exploring exquisite patterns and hues. Learn how to work smart with digital tools to generate your illustration to create complex uniformity and vibrant symmetry.

Unleash the creative potential of mathematics! Whether it’s the drawings of MC Escher or the architecture of the Islamic world, maths has been used by artists and designers for centuries. Guest STEAM facilitator Alex Dutton will coach you through three ways of mathematically developing a repeat pattern into complex figuration as well as through mathematical randomness. Then, Colour My World facilitator Jem Perks will teach you ways to make use of digital art software to create complex tessellations from your work quickly and easily! No advanced maths knowledge needed.

About the Facilitators :

Alex Dutton is a tutor, teacher and founder of STEM education NGO Phoenix Space. He brings his deep knowledge of maths gained during his studies as astrophysics and combines it with a fresh, creative perspective that is hard to find in the classroom. He coaches Days 1 & 2 Geometric Drawing.

Jem Perks is an illustrator and designer who works with both digital and traditional media. He has been commissioned to illustrate for a variety of purposes including book covers, product packaging, and event promotion. He coaches Day 3 Digital Editing.

Dive into the digital with this photo-manipulation workshop introducing the basics of video editing (masking, layering, colour-editing) on Adobe Photoshop. Use digital image manipulation and animation to create a ‘still’ moving image – or cinemagraph. Combining images from various visual sources, we will create a multi-layer, fantasy-inspired digital collage complete with moving elements designed to delight and surprise.

About the Facilitator : Trained as a video producer, editor and photographer, Savannah is a freelance artist, whose work has been featured in multiple exhibitions including a recent group show with the Hong Kong Arts Collective. She is also art director to numerous live performances. When she is not teaching art, she runs her brand SKR studios for photo and video production.

Celebrate the Lunar New Year with lots of food… and poems! Our Friday intensive drama workshop will be dedicated to reciting poetry themed around festive food. Participants will learn fun poems and act them out using props and costumes!

Celebrate the joyous, auspicious, pun-filled origins traditional Lunar New Year foods. Create a collage poster to celebrate your personal top lucky food and its lucky origins. Use photographic references to recreate the food’s form and fill it with a variety of festive printed paper.

IN DRAMA…

We are celebrating the new year by creating our own collaborative poem! Work as a team to pen your very own food poetry as you make word choices, develop rhythm and rhyme, performance and self-awareness skills. Time to get thinking about all the tasty treats we shall eat!

IN ANIMATION…

Create a stylized motion graphic to preface your presentation video. Use a computer and mouse to draw and animate your animal of choice via Photoshop.

Create a geometrical, festive bull collage that can stand on its own feet. Use a variety of textures as well as lustrous materials including assorted paper, fabric swatches and laisee packets. Begin the collage on card and take home a free-standing geometric bull to welcome in the lunar new year.

IN DRAMA…

Our young performers of 4 – 6.5 yrs will explore storytelling and the Zodiac animals through physical theatre practice. Learning narrative pantomime and physical movement, participants are invited to discover the traits of the twelve Zodiac animals as characterised in the story of “The Zodiac Animals”, delivering a physical and energetic story.

Portray unique characteristics of your favourite zodiac animals through a mixed-media illustration on wood board, inspired by the style of abstract artist Michel Keck. Experiment with layering collaged paper, pen linework, and acrylics. Study your animal of choice closely, using tracing tool for rendering its unique facial features.

IN DRAMA…

For our older performers aged 6.5 – 10 yrs, we will expand our creativity with themed characterisation and physical theatre techniques. This advanced platform of storytelling will boost collaborative ensemble-building skills of our performers, recreating the adventurous story of “The Great Animal Race”.

Join an intensive, 6-hour workshop where ceramicist Felicity Wong will guide you through creating and decorating a refined, pinched pot with underglaze. Come up with and carve original pattern designs into your ceramic ware utilizing the technique of sgraffito. Learn the basics of clay modeling and trimming on the potter’s wheel.
