‘Trompe L’oeil’ is a French term meaning ‘tricking the eye’. Create a little ‘trick’ by painting festive gift boxes wrapped with kraft paper in plaid and snowflake, or twine and greenery. You will acquire oil painting skills to create an illusion of three-dimensional depth on a two-dimensional surface through careful use of light and perspective. Observe light and shadow on the ribbons and boxes, and add personalised elements like greetings tags and decorative knicknacks.

Create a cozy winter portrait of a penguin, polar bear, or reindeer inspired by the style of Eric Carle, author and illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Follow Carle’s unique approach to creating an illustration using his signature tissue paper collages to bring his ideas to life. Come experiment with acrylic paint to achieve coloured and patterned paste paper. Take inspiration from the designs of world-renowned and award-winning ballet costume designer Holly Hynes. Create your own character design for Philip the Nutcracker, Clara, the Sugar Plum Fairy, The Mouse King, or any other of your favourite characters. Learn essential elements such as silhouette, colour, accessories, shape and fabric. Use pencil and watercolour to render their exquisite clothing and find fabric swatches to help illustrate your ideas.

Come delve into the festivities from The Nutcracker! Explore a carnival of characters synonymous with the festive season like the Sugar Plum Fairy, Mouse King, Clara and Phillip the Nutcracker. Your boundless imagination will come alive through scene exploration, characterisation, singing and dancing. We will dance devices and techniques with Julianne Eugenio to create a dance routine to Winter Wonderland and We Need a Little Christmas. Participants will get the opportunity to work individually and in groups as well as working with objects, costumes and props.

Take inspiration from the illustrative works of Victorian artist John Leach, a pioneer in the art of comics and best known for his work as the first illustrator of Charles Dickens’ 1843 novella A Christmas Carol. Now it’s your turn to take on the classic winter tale! Illustrate a scene using fine ink lines, hatching and contour to achieve an engraving-inspired look before finishing it all off with a wash of colours.

Be inspired by the artwork of Douglas Newton who, through observing reality, explored translucency, reflections and luminosity transformed by light. IN DRAMA…

This winter holiday, give your family a special message. Pen a letter accompanied by a video presentation of the performance. In our modern era of text, chat and email, we shall instead handwrite expressions of peace and love to our loved ones. Work on our presenting skills, as well as vocal and movement, to perform and revive the art of communication and give our family and friends a heartfelt festive gift.

We will focus on a different form of Performing Arts each day: Movement, Acting, and Music. Our performers will take inspiration from scenes from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and music from all of our holiday favourites, to fully engage in improvisation and performance.
