Colour My World Visual Arts E-Bulletin Sep-Oct 2022

MINDFULNESS OF BEING – HABITAT

This year, we at Colour My World are heightening our awareness of existence, our role on this planet, our relationship with others and the environment. Our Sep-Oct term is all about the concept of ‘Habitat’. While this word may typically be reserved for animals, plants and other organisms, ask yourself: are humans not animals too? If so, what are our ‘natural’ habitats like? Do we live separately from animals or do we coexist? We would celebrate the animal world, while being mindful of preserving abundant spaces for purpose of a meaningful coexistence with all animals.

ENROL NOW: Term starts from 29 Aug!

Explorer’s Art   (3 – 5 yrs)

Impression Expression

This September, the Explorers will venture out into the world of prints. Start off with ‘Print City’, a series of city-themed print design, exploring patterns and complementary colours and the art of stenciling. Then, develop intuition and decision-making in the final project to create their own experimental abstract print & stenciled calendar creation. What arrangement (layering and composition) feels right? What colours and shapes best work for any given month? Let’s tune into our artistic and abstract expression ability.

Core Art   (5 – 10 yrs)

Urban Surreal

Our Core Artists will start the year off with a focus on our natural and built habitats, both for humans and animals. The first project of ‘Gauditecture’ will be a great introduction to Gaudi’s fantastical animal-infused architecture. Create an organic urban landscape relief adopting the artist’s decorative style through a vibrant painting infused with characteristic mosaic art. Then, illustrate a Lift-a-Flap apartment façade filled with ‘Wild Neighbours’ (all the inhabitants will be animals!). Our Core Artists will use their imagination to advance their layout and drawing skills.

Ready-Set-Draw   (8 yrs+)

Portal To Elsewhere

Begin your drawing year with a little introduction to modern art history. Learn how Van Gogh and Matisse used perspective and colour. Study Van Gogh’s famous work ‘The Room’ as a one-point perspective review springboard to be redesigned into a watercolour illustration. Then, amass all your fanciful imagination to render your own atmospheric window after observing Matisse’s ‘Windows’ series.

Sculpture Culture

(Pottery-Ceramics 8 yrs+)

Fundamentals Master Class

Learn to build three-dimensionally and excel in creation that takes form in art ware, figurines, sculpture, decorative and applied art objects. Acquire fundamental skills from pinching, coiling, slab to wheel-throwing, we shall experiment with new materials whilst utilising techniques of slip casting, clay modelling, and surface texturing.

NEW!  Pixelated

(Digital Arts 10 yrs+)

WATCH THIS SPACE for our fresh new offer of Digital Arts. We will be offering digital illustration, motion graphics, and the basics of animation. You are to bring your own devices and we shall show you how to use them for creative outcomes.

Tactile Textile   (10 yrs+)

Tactile Animalia

Embrace the spirit of ‘Mottainai’ (an expression of regretting waste in Japanese). You are invited to customise and re-fashion an existing canvas bag with decoration of your own fauna-themed tactile artwork. Use soluble fabric art to depict an animal-themed creation to highlight the gifts of nature abundant with activities in the animal kingdom. Bring your artwork to life by accessorizing it onto your newly designed tote, applying both machine and hand stitches.

Architecture in Context  (13 yrs+)

Rendering technicalities with creativity, we explore architectural and interior spaces, with referenced imagery and floor plans of Hong Kong vibrant and historical landmarks to build a foundation of perspective, shape, space and form. Topics of investigation throughout the year range from Relocation, Restoration and Conversion, with rendition of a mix of architectural drawings, mood boards and illustrations; both conceptual and imaginative.

Sketchbook Studies / Painting (10 yrs+)

Blocked, Rendered, Lined

Use mixed media to create a single scene on wood board, combining perspective with graphical and painterly elements. Study the graphical compositions and dynamic linework of contemporary artist Evan Hecox’s street scenes as well as traditional Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Utilise rapid prototyping and work out a layered piece from idea and further sketchbook development to final painted artwork. Reference a personal or found photograph that shows a street full of architecture and people. Choose which parts to block with masked printing, to render out with gouache paint, and to bring out with line quality.

Mentor Studio (13 yrs+)

For art enthusiasts who are considering Art for GCSE, A-Levels, IGCSE or IB; or who simply enjoy being stretched artistically. ENROL NOW: Term starts from 3 May! Existing students do NOT need to re-enrol.

Explorer’s Art   (3 – 5 yrs)

Arcane Magic

Our Explorers shall journey into the mysterious world of magic and create props to help them feel fully immersed in fantasy. They will get ready for their journey by making key possessions of any respectable wizardkind – a pointed hat and a wand. They will then venture into potions class to make magical concoctions as they customize a secret spell book to pen all of their rarest arcane knowledge.

Core Art   (5 – 10 yrs)

Rooted Stories

Our Core Artists will be introduced to the enigmatic, mysterious side of nature. Inspired by the 15th century Voynich manuscript, they will learn about natural science illustration and produce an ink- illustrated Codex page on the secrets of the Wood Wide Web (trees’ underground conversations). Check out the ‘Curiosity Boxes’ by artists Joseph Cornell and Lam Tung Pang as our budding artists explore the themes of travel, bird migration, and connection to nature. Finally, create fine line drawings and include found objects to assemble their very own mixed-media 3D Memory Box.

Ready-Set-Draw   (8 yrs+)

Mapping Of The Self

Map out a visual representation of your personal experiences. These experiences may be memories, objects you’ve collected, or places you’ve been. Combine the techniques of Pattern Art and Mapography to create a set of symbols that communicate your narrative. Inspired by a variety of female contemporary artists Marina Strocchi, Paula Scher, Jazzberry Blue, Emily Garfield, Armelle Caron, to create a composition using watercolour and line artwork on wood.

Sculpture Culture

Tactile Textile   (10 yrs+)

Freedom’s Tail

It’s getting warmer, and the birds have once again filled our city with their songs. Due to their ability to fly, birds have come to symbolise freedom and eternity. This term, you will learn about the Modernists’ (Braque, Arp, Kandinsky, Miro) aesthetics and focus on their bird artworks. Based off a photographic reference of your favourite sparrow, robin or magpie, you will design a stylized graphic to be transposed into an embroidered work. Grab on to the bird’s tail and fly off to eternal freedom.

Architecture in Context  (13 yrs+)

Rendering technicalities with creativity, we explore architectural and interior spaces, with referenced imagery and floor plans of Hong Kong vibrant and historical landmarks to build a foundation of perspective, shape, space and form. Sketchbook Studies / Painting (10 yrs+)

My Habitat

Paint yourself or a loved one in their natural habitat from a personal photo reference. Learn and break the rules of traditional oil painting processes by purposefully committing classical painting procedure ‘fallacies’. Study the full-body view portrait works of contemporary painters like Hope Gangloff and David Hockney. Utilise line, pattern, layering, masking, and expressive colour straight-from the tube for a striking effect.

Please note: as in-person classes resume, those who are still doing zoom can use acrylic paint instead of oil for home convenience.

SPREADING KNOWLEDGE

This spring, we celebrate all the ways in which knowledge, ideas, and art are spread and exchanged. From the Western printing press spreading literacy and mass-production, to Japanese woodblock printing which rendered art accessible to the masses and subsequently revolutionized the European art world. Also from public art enjoyed by all, to one-of-a-kind monoprints, we champion an appreciation for how art is spread and enjoyed.

ENROL NOW: Term starts from 28 Feb! Existing students do NOT need to re-enrol.

Explorer’s Art   (3 – 5 yrs)

Story Craft

The Explorers are exploring the art of Story Craft. They will plot a short story and create their very own original storybook, illustrated with a variety of printmaking, stenciling, and collaging. Participants will explore creative collaging, practice, and develop basic understanding of characterization, composition & perspective. Create scenes, design characters, use unusual colours, it’s entirely up to them!

Core Art   (5 – 10 yrs)

Print & Logogram

Our Core Artists will learn about how printing has changed the world for the better. They will touch upon the subject of printing from the East with Japanese woodblock printing to the West with the invention of the first printing press to logographic writing across cultures. First, they will look into printmaker Mori Yuzan’s 1903 traditional wave and ripple relief prints to create their own monochromatic version. They will then invent symbols to represent a short script in the creation of an accordion book of logogram prints complemented by illustrative watercolour drawings bound in delicate calico.

Ready-Set-Draw   (8 yrs+)

Printing Without A Press

Turn the conventionally commercial medium of printing into fine art through techniques inspired by iconic printers such as Andy Warhol and Anthony Veloni. We shall study the basics of still life drawing and explore the art of one-of-a-kind, multi-layered printing. We shall begin the term with a tonal study of mundane objects arranged in a still life, learning to render volume and proportion from observation. Then, use still life as the subject of our print.

Tactile Textile   (10 yrs+)

Dazed & Confused

Prepare to be dazed & confused by the human mind. Study the works of contemporary fibre artist Rosie James and portrait photographer Maurizio Anzeri. We shall explore the art of organic thread drawing with textile trailing and embroidered photographic work of dexterous patterns. Using a personal or found photograph as a base, express our creative or emotional response.

Large Environments

Learn to create large-scale paintings that could be murals on buildings or huge canvases spanning the width of entire gallery walls. Female artists Chiho Aoshima (Japanese pop-Art, Superflat movement) and Asa Go (Korean-Japanese artist) are the inspirations. Consider where our mural could be displayed, and how it would affect the public. Draft composition, plan values and colours, and scale the artwork into an acrylic painting on a canvas prototype. Achieve specific outcomes through acrylic mediums, such as glazing effects, gradients, and blending. Focus on portraying a large environment while using both traditional as well as contemporary painting techniques and sensibilities.

Mentor Studio (13 yrs+)
