NARRATIVE & NATURE

Explore the subjects of Narrative and Nature through an exciting new term of visual arts exploration at your favourite studio. Our Core Artists will tackle both as they speculate on the future of the natural world. Ready-Set-Drawers will illustrate a stylised children’s book. Pixelated and Sketchbook Studies & Painting participants will explore placing a character in an environment, inspired by the whimsy of Tove Jansson for the former and mysterious drama of Frank Frazetta for the latter.

Explorer’s Art   (3 – 5 yrs)

Blooming Garden

Immerse yourself in nature’s colours as you create floral-inspired faux stained-glass art. Explore Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s distinctive style of abstract botanical motifs abundant in the Art Nouveau movement. Hone your fine motor skills through line work and colour blocking to fashion an original faux stained-glass piece. Then look to innovative glass artist Dale Chihuly and how his creations bloom into dazzling bouquets. Using vibrant materials that play with light and transparency, translate the imagery of flowers into an expressive floral sculpture reminiscent of Chihuly’s blown glass installations.

Core Art   (5 – 10 yrs)

Cherishing Nature

This term in Core Art we’ll continue our journey through contemporary art with Geraldine Javier, whose “Witness” prompted visitors at Art Basel Hong Kong 2026 to reflect on their interactions with the natural world. We’ll first investigate her use of “eco printing” with our own vegetable-derived pigments made here at the studio. Then we’ll speculate on how life will adapt to ever-changing conditions with animal-plant hybrids rendered in black ink. Finally, we’ll combine Javier’s work with her inspiration, Maria Sibylla Merian (the pioneering 17th century scientific illustrator) to create delicately illustrated visions of the future in watercolour on suspended sheets of Chinese Xuan paper.

Drawing Fundamentals   (6 – 8 yrs)

Balance

In this term of “Drawing Fundamentals”, you will be looking at the art principle of Balance. Much like the “Ying” and the “Yang” in Chinese philosophy and the art principle of Contrast, Balance can be found by juxtaposing two dissimilar environments side by side to compare them, contrast them, or create a striking effect. Partly inspired by Monet’s “Haystacks” series of paintings, you will be drawing and painting a beautiful rural scene in the Northern Hemisphere using pencil and watercolour, divided and unified by two opposing seasons!

Ready-Set-Draw   (8 yrs+)

Picture Book Art

In this term of “Ready-Set-Draw”, you will be diving head-first into the wonderful world of children’s book illustrations. Appreciate the colourful cartoon-like styles of Rodrigo Merched’s children’s book projects and concept art for literary works. After settling on a style that feels personal and unique to you, use acrylic and ink markers to create your very own heavy white board children’s book for your whole family to enjoy!

Comics   (8 yrs+)

The Ninth Art: Bande Dessinée

Create a two-page digital comic that reflects stylism and influences of European comic legends. Explore how comic art has been adapted and shaped by different cultures, focusing on Franco-Belgian comics (more commonly known as bande dessinée). Learn its history and key artists like Hergé (The Adventures of Tin Tin), Pierre Culliford (Smurfs), and Moebius. Observe the distinctive panel structure and colour use seen in the bande dessinée. Develop digital art skills and explore how this medium can enhance your comic-making knowhow.

Pixelated

(Digital Arts 10 yrs+)

Distant Lands

Tove Jansson is known worldwide as the creator of The Moomins, but did you know she had a long and varied career as a painter? Take inspiration from both sides of her work with a series of digital paintings reminiscent of watercolour and ink, rendered in a loose and expressive style that places the focus on light, colour, and a longing for a faraway natural landscape.

Ceramic Fanatics

(Pottery-Ceramics 10 yrs+)

Positive Through Negative

Discover the rich interplay of carving and hand-building. Learn to appreciate positive and negative space through plaster carving, where the empty forms are just as important as the solid. Use subtractive low-relief carving to create a mould for an intricate box lid. From the initial sketch transfer to slab construction, from surface texturizing to matte or shiny glazing, we will learn all the essential plaster carving skills while fashioning a functional keepsake box decorated with an original relief design.

Sketchbook Studies & Painting   (10 yrs+)

Mystery & Drama

Take inspiration from the undisputed king of fantasy art, Frank Frazetta, and learn gouache illustration techniques. Frazetta’s horror and sci-fi magazine paintings from the 60s-70s feature iconic nightmarish humanoid creatures like vampires, werewolves, Frankenstein’s monster, and more. Use contemporary internet mythology such as the Backrooms, iconic fictional spooky podcasts like Welcome To Night Vale, and Lovecraftian beings as inspiration for a dramatic narrative painted illustration. Form your striking scene through a combination of digital and physical pose references, as well as anatomy studies from textbooks and photographs. Master gouache on black paper and bring that special Frazetta-inspired drama into your picture.
