Explorer’s Art   (3 – 5 yrs)

That’s Surreal!

Have you ever had very weird dreams? If so, then let’s make some art out of it! Our Explorers will find out what Surrealism is all about, starting with an experimental kinetic art sculpture (decorative hanging mobile) featuring suspended and balanced shapes and textures. Then you will fashion an original photomontage using a photo portrait of yourself, complemented by a blend of dream imagery and bizarre elements in Australian artist Loui Jover’s distinct ink-wash style.

Core Art   (5 – 10 yrs)

I Had A Dream

Our Core Artists will be taking inspiration from Rene Magritte and other surrealist artists famous for challenging perceptions of reality by placing ordinary mundane objects in unfamiliar and witty contexts. Start off with a Surrealist game, once popularized by artists in the 1920s, a chance-based activity designed to bypass conscious logic and unlock the unconscious mind, creating unexpected results. You will choose objects at random and combine them into a painting of a humanoid in an alien setting. Then you will learn about the importance of structure and balance in three-dimensional form and build together facial features with clay a la Magritte.

Drawing Fundamentals   (6 – 8 yrs)

Zootopia!

In an ever-evolving world that is now filled with artificially made art, it’s important to remember that all art once came solely from the hands and minds of humans. Our participants will prompt themselves by asking the question: “What would my favourite animal look like in human attire?” If it’s a rabbit, how do we visually communicate its personal identity, cultural affiliation and status? The result, a physical artwork made conventionally from start to finish, will be a humorous animal portrait drawn with pencil and enhanced with gouache on paper. If you can imagine it, you can create it!

Ready-Set-Draw   (8 yrs+)

The Magic Number

This upcoming term, we shall practice the final Principle of Art: Unity. By applying all of the 7 Principles of Art, our participants will use pen work and watercolour to create a fantasy-inspired triptych illustration worthy of the art history books! We’ll be adding focal points to our artwork using Contrast and Emphasis, apply symmetry and asymmetry to achieve a sense of Balance and incorporate Rhythm and Repetition to evoke a sense of stillness in our environments — all while assigning Movement to our unique characters and creatures. Unity is the principle of design that teaches us how to organize all of our varied elements and cohesively tie them into one composition in order to create a sense of harmony and completeness!

Comics   (8 yrs+)

Anatomy of a Cover

Fashion compelling comic book covers with a strong focus on graphic design elements strategic in cover design. Study real comic and manga covers, as well as contemporary samples to understand how visual hierarchy, layout, colour, and stylistic choices blend together. Use watercolour, ink pens, and acrylic markers to create your own cover that conveys the theme and tone of your narrative. Further hone key skills in illustration, composition, colour theory, and typography to create an eye-catching cover!

Pixelated

(Digital Arts 10 yrs+)

Digital Nouveau

Have you ever seen an advert so beautiful you wanted to hang it on your wall or make it your phone wallpaper? This term we’re taking inspiration from Alphonse Mucha, best known for his intricate Art Nouveau promotional posters, admired as pieces of art in their own right. Now in the 21st century the tall, thin format of his posters finds a new purpose, filling the display on a smart phone. Promote your favourite book, movie, or game with a full-screen poster, bringing together a range of digital art skills including illustration, typography, and graphic design, while learning how to balance a composition, contrasting areas of flat colour with dense patterns and details.

Ceramic Fanatics

(Pottery-Ceramics 10 yrs+)

Berries & Toast

Bring home a little piece of summer with our Berry Bowl module. Learn core hand-building skills to mould our very own berry bowl true to real fruit proportion while exploring size, pattern and perforations. Practice slab-moulding with plaster forms, cut and shape templates, add structural and decorative details before experimenting with underglaze finishes. Then, turn snack time into craft time with our Toast Clock module – a playful, practical project as we design and build a toast-shaped table clock that encapsulates all essential knowhow such as shrinkage calculation to fit a clock mechanism following two times firing. From sketching and measuring to carefully joining decorations, each step develops creative thinking, fine motor control and basic structural engineering in clay.

Sculpture Culture

(Mixed-media 3D Design 10 yrs+)

Casting Me

Inspired by artist Rachel Dein’s botanical sculptures from concrete and plaster, this term will introduce you to the exciting medium of mod roc and the knowhow of sculptural casting. You’ll bring in objects that represent and reflect you, learn how to turn them into cast forms while developing a balance of composition to optimize visual impact. You’ll then plan and arrange your cast pieces onto a canvas to create a textured sculptural relief that uniquely reflects you.

Sketchbook Studies & Painting   (10 yrs+)

Painter’s Tape

Explore a range of traditional and contemporary techniques to create a layered portrait in oil. Learn the basics of mixing skin tones and painting facial features. Portray yourself dressed as a character (original or other) and posed for a dramatic portrait. Add an extra ‘layer’ to your oil painting through scalpel and masking techniques often used in contemporary art. Peel for the big reveal!

Mentor Studio   (13 yrs+)

For art enthusiasts who are considering Art for GCSE, A-Levels, IGCSE or IB; or who simply enjoy being stretched artistically. Mentor Studio is open to any participants who want to strengthen their skill repertoire, build on their collection of portfolio-worthy artworks, or explore challenging themes through open-ended self-enquiry guided closely by a mentor.
