PLACES, PEOPLE AND PATTERNS

The relationship between the inner world of the mind and the outer world of the physical has long been the topic of artistic investigation. This upcoming term, we’ll draw the great outdoors like Caspar David Friedrich, we’ll paint interior spaces like Hernan Bas, and we’ll venture into the mind, where maths, science and art meet, like MC Escher. So whether you’re taking inspiration from the people, landscapes, and buildings around you, or focussing inwards on the world of the mind, we’ll have a project that’s right for you!

Explorer’s Art   (3 – 5 yrs)

Less screen time, more creative play! Come experiment with our curated list of STEAM-inspired art projects and create amazing paper-crafted toys to share with friends! Combining basic science concepts, a little engineering, abundant illustration and decoration, plus a whole lot of fun! From Galactic Sensation, Magic Characters to Jack in the Box and Wiggle Jiggle Animals!

Core Art   (5 – 10 yrs)

Patterns in Motion

Be inspired by one of the world’s most famous graphic artists, MC Escher. We’ll indulge in pattern design, stamp and printmaking to appreciate Escher’s fascinating art of transformation from a bird to a fish. Study his portrayal of geometrical relationships among shapes, figures, and space, playing with positive and negative shapes. After creating stamps by drawing and embossing elements from nature, participants will then use their stamps to turn a single motif into beautiful printed tessellations, showing the illusion of moving patterns to achieve a harmonious balance.

Drawing Fundamentals   (6 – 8 yrs)

White & Black

Learn about Space, one of the core elements of art. Come explore positive and negative space, what they mean, how to identify them in an art piece, and how this stylistic feature helps the artist communicate. In practice, we will experiment with Notan art to appreciate how negative and positive elements of a composition interact with one another, then investigate further to render unique hand-drawn tessellations of your own design.

Ready-Set-Draw   (8 yrs+)

Where Would You Go?

If your imagination could take you anywhere, where would you go? We’ll be taking our newly-created characters (from Sep-Oct) outside for a stroll! By looking at influential landscape masters such as Caspar David Friedrich (romantic landscapes), Albert Bierstadt (lavish American West landscapes) and Moebius (surreal fantasy landscapes), we’ll be learning about crucial drawing principles such as how to apply a one-point-perspective and create the illusion of depth in our artworks. We’ll pen captivating scenery (natural, urban or fantastical) for our characters to inhabit; and a stunning 3-dimensional “pop-up rendition” enhanced with watercolour pencils and ink.

Comics   (8 yrs+)

Silent Comics

There are times when our words fail us and we can only express our stories through images alone. Silent comics have the advantage of being accessible to a wider range of readers as images can offer us visual clues to help decode stories. Look at a broad spectrum of silent comics from superhero comics, gag comics and mangas to learn what makes them effective in their storytelling. Create your own silent comic – when words, narration and dialogue go away, tell your story purely through visuals!

NEW! Sculpture Culture

(Mixed-media 3D Design 10 yrs+)

Sculptural Inner Self

The art of masks have been used since early antiquity with the earliest design being made of stone and seashells! Throughout history masks have been created and used for a variety of reasons – as a disguise to conceal oneself, for ceremonial and ancient rituals, and for performance and entertainment. For the Venetians, masks were a means of creating a certain image of a character in theatres. This term, we shall take inspiration from the symbolic Comedy and Tragedy muses to create two opposing theatrical symbols that reflect contrasting parts of your inner self. Use sculpting mediums such as modroc, clay and paints to bring to life your own mask creations.
